PRP hair treatment in Delhi and Jaipur, India

What is PRP treatment?

By definition, PRP contains concentrated amount of platelet concentration, 10,00,000 per mL platelet count, threefold to eightfold superior amount as compared to the normal blood (range 1,50,000- 3,50,000 per mL).

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is used as an innovative therapy in diverse fields including dentistry, surgery, orthopaedics, dermatology and aesthetics. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is an appealing emerging minimally invasive therapeutic modality to enhance tissue healing.

PRP is a product that is manufactured from patients own blood because of which there is no chance of transmission of diseases from other persons and chance of allergic reaction which is commonly seen with drugs. PRP is prepared either manually or by the use of automated devices, in a day care setting just prior to the procedure. The process must be carried out under strict aseptic conditions as well as optimum temperature regulations of 20‐22°C. To inhibit platelet aggregation, it is prepared with an anticoagulant. Commonly used anticoagulants are citrate dextrose solu‐ tion formula A (ACD‐A) or sodium citrate.

Activated PRP promotes differentiation of stem cells into hair follicle cells through the up regulation of transcriptional activity of β‐catenin. It also induces in vitro proliferation of dermal papilla cells and increases dermal papilla cell growth by activating extracellular signal‐regulated kinase signalling.

What is Genetic hair loss?

Genetic hair loss, also known as Androgenetic alopecia, male pattern baldness or female pattern baldness, is the most common type of hair loss in men (in about 50% of men), which is expressed by a progressive hair loss in specific areas of scalp (such as anterior scalp, mid‐scalp, temporal scalp, and vertex). Androgenetic Alopecia is the diffuse hair thinning which occurs in 40% of women or hair loss in the crown combined with an ‘‘M’’-shaped hairline recession in 70% of men. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in sensitized areas of the scalp is believed to cause miniaturization of the hair follicle and lead to pattern hair loss. The clinical presentation is different between men and women; as in the men, hair loss progression is mostly dominant in bilateral temporal and vertex areas. Outside of surgery, current approved therapy options include oral finasteride and topical minoxidil. Both are limited in that finasteride is not approved for use in women and is associated with undesirable side effects while use of minoxidil requires a long-lasting commitment to daily applications. Moreover, neither drug produces result in all patients nor efficacy is limited, especially in more severe, longer-term cases. With more hair restoration clinics choosing to offer PRP therapy, data on treatment efficacy have begun to accumulate. The Androgenetic Alopecia application remains in the early stages as treatment protocols are still being refined. At this time, PRP has been used in combination with hair transplant surgery and as an injectable therapy alone.

PRP treatment for genetic hair loss

Platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) is among treatment options for Androgenetic alopecia. PRP is a human platelet concentrate in a small volume of plasma containing certain cytokines such as platelet‐derived growth factor (PDGF), EGF, transforming growth factor (TGF), VEGF, IGF, and interleukin‐1. It is assumed that growth factors from platelets stimulate stem cells which in turn are responsible for developing new follicles and promoting formation of new blood vessels and accordingly play a role in the treatment of alopecia. The PRP hair treatment helps in regeneration of new hair follicles, increasing the thickness of the existing hairs, decreasing the rate of hair loss, increasing the healing rate and increasing the density of hairs. As depicted earlier, the hair loss in Androgenetic Alopecia occurs because of DHT (Di-hydro testosterone) hormone which causes thinning of hair roots and further shedding of hair follicles. The growth factors present in PRP causes reversal of effects caused because of DHT hormone and thus, reduces the hair fall and increases the thickness of hairs.

How PRP works?

Many growth factors play fundamental roles in altering the hair cycle. The most important growth factors that have been identified in this field include vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF), insulin‐like growth factor (IGF), and fibroblast growth factor (FGF).

Upon injecting into the desired area, platelets undergo some changes, and rapidly release a mixture of growth factors which is continued in lesser extent up to several days. PRP also contains plasma and over 20 growth factors, which include platelet-derived endothelial growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor b (TGFb), fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), epidermal growth factor, insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), and, in addition, thrombin, which has biological and adhesive properties. PRP also induces overexpression of growth factors. Through the complex interaction of growth and differentiation factors and along with adhesive protein factors, PRP is believed to stimulate healing by promoting regeneration, increases cell division, formation of new blood vessels, extra-cellular matrix formation, and collagen synthesis.

Following effects are seen with injecting PRP in the scalp:

  • Reduction in hair fall in patients with Androgenetic Alopecia
  • Thickening of hair shaft in patients with hair thinning
  • Regeneration of hair follicles up to an extent
  • Decreased healing period with hair transplant
  • Improved results of hair transplant

What are the advantages of PRP?

  • Decreased hair loss
  • Increased thickness of hair follicle shaft
  • Regeneration of new hair follicles
  • Low level of invasiveness,
  • Minimal side effects reported
  • Biological reasonableness, no chances of disease transmission or allergic reaction
  • Benefits reported in both men and women with androgenic alopecia
  • Recently, a number of reports have been published showing promising results for the treatment of Androgenetic alopecia.
  • The addition of PRP is useful in improving the outcomes of hair transplantation procedures.
  • The studies conducted so far on the effects of PRP on androgenic alopecia overall have shown quantitatively beneficial outcomes.

Method of extracting PRP from blood:

It is a three step procedure. Firstly, a small amount of venous blood is taken from the patient, mostly from the brachial artery (in arm). Then, the blood is subjected to centrifugation machine for a specific time period. After centrifugation, the blood is separated in to three parts, platelets enriched plasma, and platelets deprived plasma and blood cells.  During the centrifugation process, natural enhancement of the platelet enriched plasma with growth factors, anti-inflammatory elements, and cell signalling molecules. The platelet rich plasma is taken and injected in to the scalp at the areas of baldness.

PRP in hair transplant:

These are the benefits of PRP therapy with hair transplant:

  • Enhancement and preservation of the viability of hair follicle during and after the procedure.
  • Enhanced results after the hair transplant procedure
  • Reduction in hair loss
  • Preservation of previously present hairs
  • Increase in thickness of pre-existing hairs
  • Increased and enhanced healing at the recipient site after hair transplantation.
  • Stimulated dormant hair follicles and boosted growth of new hair follicles.
  • Higher acceptance rate for vulnerable hair grafts.
  • No danger of allergic or hypersensitivity reaction.
  • Stimulated dormant hair follicles and boosted growth of new hair follicles.
  • Higher acceptance rate for vulnerable hair grafts.
  • No danger of allergic or hypersensitivity reaction.

PRP therapy before hair transplantation surgery:

This procedure is to be employed for preparation of scalp before graft harvesting. In hair transplantation, hair follicles from donor site are harvested and transplanted to the recipient site. PRP therapy at donor site prior to the hair transplantation benefits in augmenting the hair density at the donor site which results in increased availability of viable grafts. These grafts are used during the procedure. This procedure is highly efficient and advantageous in patients who have low density at donor sites by increasing and boosting the hair growth at these sites.

Cost of PRP treatment in Delhi

The PRP hair treatment cost in Delhi varies from INR 10,000 to 20,000 per session. The PRP hair treatment cost in India is quite economical as compared to PRP hair treatment cost in other countries such as USA, UK, Australia and Canada. The PRP hair treatment cost is quite cheaper as compared to the hair transplant cost in India. The PRP hair treatment is advisable for patients whose hair transplant has just started or they have lower grade of baldness.

Is PRP hair treatment suitable for you?

Do you have hair loss problem and looking for hair loss treatment instead of a hair transplant, then read this. Usually, hair transplant is the most favourable treatment for genetic hair loss.

PRP hair loss treatment is most favourable for those patients who are at initial stages of Androgenetic Alopecia such as Grade II or Grade III. Because PRP helps in improving the thickness of existing hair grafts and reducing the rate of hair loss; regeneration of hair follicles occur only to some extent, which is non-comparable as compared to the results with hair transplant. However, a hair transplant procedure is not advised for patients who are younger than 18 years or are at initial stages of hair loss.

Thus, to summarise PRP hair treatment is advisable for following individuals:

  • Persons at initial stages of genetic hair loss
  • NW Grade II to Grade III hair loss
  • With hair transplant to enhance the results
  • After hair transplant procedure to minimise the hair loss for pre-existing hairs

Number of sessions required for PRP:

Usually, for PRP hair treatment in Delhi and Jaipur, India, it is advisable to get 3-4 PRP sessions with a gap of 6-8 weeks regularly in the initial stages to maximise the concentration of growth factors in the scalp. After 3-4 sessions, it is advisable to get one PRP session every 4-6 months to maintain the results. Patients failing to stick to the proposed regimen can have reversal of symptoms.

Common precautions to be followed with PRP:

Sterilisation: Every step of PRP therapy should be done with sterile technique especially in patients with underlying condition and more vulnerable to infection.

Complete medical history: The use of PRP therapy is contraindicated in some conditions. A detailed medical and surgical history should be obtained to avoid any discrepancies during and after the surgery. Also, it is advisable for the patient to raise any query related to the procedure.
